Bank plan for growth is to add services
Huntington Bancshares has been on the defensive for more than a year, raising capital and cutting costs to survive a rough economic stretch.
"But now, we're ready to play offense, to grow the bank," Huntington CEO Stephen Steinour said.
Although the Columbus-based financial institution has not revealed its full growth plan, three of the components have been unveiled in recent weeks. They give a glimpse into the bank's overall strategic plan, which seems designed to grow Huntington's core business in the Midwest by offering new services to current customers, both individuals and companies.
The bank will:
• Launch a foreign-exchange business designed to help companies buy and sell products internationally.
• Create a national settlement service to help those who win large legal settlements manage their money.
• Expand its financial-adviser offices, starting with one in Huntington, W.Va.
"This is a growth plan," Steinour said. "There are no plans to reduce expenses or get out of certain geographic markets. We will grow from the core and grow even in this (down economic) cycle and build our future as a Midwest bank."
